Academic journals
Between November 1st and December 31st, 2022, 37 new issues of Ibero-American History journals were published. Titles differ greatly in places of publication, themes and focuses of interest, of course. The majority are from Spanish-speaking countries, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Spain. However, there are also some publications in Portuguese, such as those from Brazil and Portugal.
Magazines cover a wide variety of topics, including regional history, history of science, social and cultural history, archaeology, art history and memory history. Some focus on specific periods, such as Modern and Contemporary History of Mexico, while others take a more general approach to history, such as ANPHLAC. Some have a diffuse concern, such as Ciencia Nueva, which focuses on popularizing science, while others focus on teaching history, such as Clío & Asociados.
Finally, magazines such as História Mexicana and Arqueología Histórica Argentina y Latinoamericana published editions covering part of the period from January to March 2023, while titles such as Ágora, Albuquerque, Antígona, ArtCultura, História – UFBA published new issues during the mentioned period.
Profile of reviewed books
In the same period (November/December 2022) 14 book reviews were published. Of this total, 7 address topics related to history and politics, 2 on the environment, 2 on health, 1 on Latin American culture and 2 on topics that cover different areas. Most of the reviewed books were published in Portuguese (8), followed by English (3) and Spanish (3).
From the analysis of the titles of the books, it is possible to notice that the themes and approaches range from the examination of the culture and history of the Latin American city (Adrian Gorelik) to the history and importance of palm oil at a global level (Jonathan E robins). Environmental themes include concerns about solid waste disposal (Marco Armiero) and an environmental history during the Ottoman Empire (Chris Gratien). The themes of politics address the liberation of Rome during World War II (Gabriel Ranzato), alliances between the Axis countries (Daniel Hedinger) and land reform in Mexico (Luis Aboites) and Bolivia (Carmen Soliz).
The reviews also examine books that deal with the custody of the mentally ill (Vila Renzo), the practices of doctors and soldiers with the mentally ill (Fábio Milazzo) and the relationship between politics and psychiatry in Brazil (Gustavo Querodia Tarelow). Finally, they deal with long-term environmental history (Bradley Shopyk), with “desire and inequality” (Sara Lafuente-Funes).
All that remains is to appreciate this variety, browsing through the summaries and titles of books made available in the sequence.
